    The only time I wore a mortarboard was high school graduation. Our caps were red with white tassles.

    When my son received his latest University degree he chose to wear a "tudor bonnet" (a tam) instead of the traditional mortarboard.

    Mortarboard is also a device a mason uses to carry mortar.
